Standing tall in Hong Kong for a quarter of a century, the Karin Weber Gallery is kicking off 2025 with its first exhibition, "Beyond Boundaries: A Female Perspective." This exhibition showcases how female artists from around the world utilize their strength and unwavering pursuit of art to explore new paths in life amidst adversity.
In "Beyond Boundaries: A Female Perspective," the struggles and resilience of modern female artists are on full display. The featured artists hail from various cultures and backgrounds, and their works reflect the diverse facets of womanhood in contemporary society, shaped by their unique historical experiences.
One highlight of the exhibition is the participation of three female artists from Myanmar: Soe Yu Nwe, Thynn Lei Nwe, and Khin Thethar Latt (Nora). Soe and Thynn completed their art education in the United States and Singapore, respectively, before bringing their new impressions and techniques back to their homeland to continue their artistic endeavors. Nora, who focuses on photography, engages in multimedia practices in her hometown of Yangon, intentionally concealing her identity with a bright red face to highlight the erasure of identity and individuality under oppressive regimes.
Local Hong Kong artists Ho Hang-yi and Lau Po-yan explore, deconstruct, analyze, and reimagine their beloved city through their chosen printmaking and painting mediums, expressing their local identities and sense of place with a highly personalized perspective.
Annette Marie Townsend from Wales, UK, who has a background in natural history and restoration, presents works that move beyond her signature wax medium. She reconstructs and delineates incredibly lifelike plant details through meticulous observation. German abstract painter Tina Buchholtz creates multi-layered, highly textured works on canvas, infusing new meaning into the process with her dynamic brush strokes.
